The Wolf

Tears billowed down her cheeks as she stared at the reflection in the mirror, the ghost of who she once was. Shards of shattered glass broken into perfectly unique shapes sharp enough to cut through the pain that she carried each day.

Flashbacks raced through her mind of the times before the wolf came upon her, memories of a beautiful and adventurous life completely untamed.
What once was would never be again and yet she knew she had to pick up the shards of broken glass ever so carefully so she could once again find the strength to live.

As she began to create a mosaic out of the shards, one piece at a time, she realized each precious broken piece resembled a piece of her heart; beautiful, cherished, loved, treasured memories of her life and those she loved. With a renewed sense of anticipation, she began putting the pieces back together as best as she knew how until she stared with disbelief at the beauty right in front of her eyes.

As the tears once again rolled down her face and blurred the image before her, a butterfly appeared right in the middle of the mosaic, its’ wings spread wide with possibility, it’s colors magnificent, a majestic pattern unlike any other ever known.

It was then in that moment she realized it was not a ghost after all in that mirror. It was the soul of the butterfly wrapped tightly inside its cocoon just waiting to burst forth with new life and purpose.

She began to laugh and dance and sing again because she knew the wolf was no longer in the mirror.  It was a part of her, but just one piece among hundreds of other pieces bound together by hope, faith, determination, perseverance, and most importantly, love.
